We have a saying that sums it up quite well: “To be one, ask one” (2B1, Ask 1). Freemasons are prohibited from the solicitation of new members, so it can be difficult to discover how to approach the fraternity for membership.

First of all, there are qualifications for entry. They include:

  • Be a Man – Freemasonry is a Fraternity and open to men only.
  • Of Mature Age – In this jurisdiction, a Freemason must be at least 21 years old.
  • Of Strict Morals – A Freemason is always striving to improve his moral character. He starts out as a good man and strives for continuous improvement. We do not expect perfection, but he should have a good foundation on which to build upon during his Masonic journey.
  • Affirm belief in a Supreme Being – Freemasonry is not a religion, but in order to become a Freemason, one must be able to profess a belief in a Supreme Being. Freemasonry is open to all faiths and spiritual paths, provided they include a belief in a Supreme Being.

We cannot sign you up online, so here is what you need to do:

  1. Contact any Freemason you may know. This is the best course, as he can put you in touch with everyone you need to reach. He can also answer many of the questions you may have.
  2. If you are not acquainted with any Freemasons, send us your contact information and someone from Westminster Lodge will work with you. Please email the Secretary of Westminster Lodge No. 174 with your full name, street address and Postal Code, telephone number and email address, and any questions. Include “I am interested in joining Freemasonry” in the subject line. When we have your contact information, we can provide more details on next steps.
  3. You will receive instructions from members of Westminster Lodge on the principles and workings of Freemasonry as well as the expectations Freemasonry will have from you.
  4. Two members of the Lodge must sponsor you and will sign your application once they are satisfied that you are right for Freemasonry and Freemasonry is a good fit for you. When signed, it will be presented to the Lodge for consideration.
  5. If approved, your next step is the Initiation Ceremony, the first of three degrees you will need to complete before you become a Master Mason.

This may sound a bit long and complex, but it is all for a good cause. Along the way, there will be numerous occasions for you to meet the Lodge Members in social as well as Masonic engagements. The purpose is for us to get to know you, and for you to get to know us. Then, when you start your Masonic journey, you will be more informed of what to expect.
