Freemasonry is not political, even though some people assume it must be.

Over the years, many well-known leaders, public figures and capable men have been Freemasons. That has sometimes led to speculation about influence, politics or hidden agendas.

Inside the Lodge, partisan politics is set aside on purpose. Like sectarian religious debate, it can divide men who would otherwise meet in friendship and mutual respect.

By keeping politics outside the Lodge, Freemasonry creates space for something better: fellowship, reflection, history, philosophy, charity and the development of character.

Freemasonry is not about promoting a political programme. It is about building men who think clearly, act with integrity and contribute meaningfully to their families, communities and country.

Freemasonry is not a religion, and it does not ask a man to leave his religion behind.

It begins with a simple requirement: belief in a Supreme Being. Beyond that, Freemasonry makes room for men of different faiths, backgrounds and perspectives to stand together with respect.

In a Lodge, one may find Christians, Jews, Muslims, Sikhs and men of other faiths meeting as brothers. The focus is not on what divides them. The focus is on how a man lives, acts, improves and treats others.

Freemasonry does not preach a particular doctrine. It does not replace a man’s faith. It does not pressure him to conform to someone else’s religious view.

It offers a framework of tolerance, dignity and shared moral purpose.

In a world that often pushes people into separate corners, Freemasonry brings men back to common ground.

There is a great deal said about Freemasonry that simply is not true.

Over time, rumours have been repeated by sensational writers, films, television programmes and people who do not understand what they are seeing. Mystery fills the gaps. Speculation spreads quickly. Misunderstandings become myths.

Freemasonry does have private ceremonies and traditional modes of recognition. These are part of the experience of membership and progression through the degrees. But that does not mean Freemasonry has a hidden agenda.

Its ceremonies are structured, thoughtful and rooted in moral teaching. Its symbols are used to encourage reflection on character, responsibility and the improvement of the self.

If you step past the noise and look at Freemasonry directly, what you find is simple and solid: good men working on themselves, supporting one another and trying to live with integrity.

Freemasonry is about doing the work on yourself.

It begins with faith, moral responsibility and belief in something higher than the self. From there, it asks a man to consider how he lives day to day: his choices, his standards, his word and his conduct toward others.

Freemasonry draws on ideas that have lasted for centuries. Its teachings touch on discipline, virtue, wisdom, self-control, truth and service. These ideas are not treated as abstract theories. They are meant to be lived.

A Mason is encouraged to take an honest look at who he is, where he falls short and where he can improve.

No shortcuts. No pretending. Just honest self-appraisal and steady progress.

Over time, that effort shows in how a man thinks, acts, speaks and serves the people who depend on him.

Many men today live increasingly isolated lives. Work can be remote. Friendships can become scattered. Much of daily life happens online.

The result is that many capable men find themselves missing the kind of connection that comes from standing face to face with others who share their values.

Freemasonry brings men together in the real world, with real purpose.

Members meet regularly, learn together, serve together and support one another through the ordinary and important moments of life.

This is not networking. It is not small talk. It is fellowship, earned over time and built through shared experience.

In that environment, a man can find connection, clarity and the quiet confidence that comes from belonging to a brotherhood of good men, all striving to improve.

Freemasons give back in practical ways: through charity, volunteering and leadership in their communities.

This work can include support for healthcare, education, disaster relief, food banks, youth programmes and local charitable causes. But Freemasonry is not only about writing cheques. It is about showing up, serving consistently and accepting responsibility for the welfare of others.

In British Columbia and Yukon, Freemasons have supported cancer care and research, student bursaries and programmes for children and families facing serious illness. Locally, Westminster Lodge supports charitable work in Langley and the surrounding community.

Freemasonry teaches that a man should leave the world better than he found it. That principle is lived through service, generosity and steady commitment.

The work is simple, but important: good men working together to help where help is needed.

A Freemason is a man over 21 who believes in a Supreme Being and takes his own growth seriously.

He holds himself to a higher standard. He values integrity, responsibility, respect and service. He accepts that becoming a better man requires effort, accountability and a willingness to reflect honestly on his own conduct.

Freemasonry is a brotherhood built on principles that do not go out of style. Its members come from different backgrounds, faiths, professions and perspectives, but they share a common goal: to grow, support one another and give back in ways that matter.

This is not passive. Freemasonry is active, deliberate work. Through shared experiences, honest reflection, symbolism and long-standing traditions, a man sharpens his thinking and strengthens his character. He gains perspective. He finds direction.
